We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Headmaster, Mr Bennjamyn Smith, who will take up the post in September 2026.

Following a rigorous and highly competitive recruitment process, the Governors selected Mr Smith for his exceptional leadership experience and strong alignment with the school’s ethos. Bennjamyn brings extensive expertise from both UK and international independent education. Most recently he has served as Headmaster of Kitebrook School, and his previous roles include senior leadership positions both internationally and in the UK. As well as having a Masters in Education Leadership, he is also undertaking a PhD in Education, focusing on leadership and school development.

“I am delighted to be appointed as the new Headmaster of Durlston, particularly at such an exciting moment in the school’s growth and development. It is clear that Durlston is a truly exceptional community, defined by its positive, nurturing ethos and its dedicated commitment to securing the very best outcomes for every child. I look forward to leading this inspirational school as it embarks on the next chapter of its long and successful history.”

The appointment follows the announcement that current Headmaster, Richard May, will retire after a decade of distinguished service. Richard, together with his wife Sarah, has made an exceptional contribution to the life of the school, offering unwavering support to pupils, staff and families. Before his departure, Richard looks forward to celebrating a significant milestone with the school’s inaugural Year 11 cohort as they receive Durlston’s first GCSE results this summer.

As Durlston prepares for this next chapter, the Governing Body will work closely with both Richard and Bennjamyn to ensure a smooth and positive transition, maintaining stability and momentum across all areas of school life.

“Throughout the interview process, Bennjamyn impressed us with his clarity of vision, strategic insight and deep appreciation of Durlston’s ethos. As the school continues to thrive as a through school for children aged 2–16, we are confident he will bring energy, warmth and thoughtful leadership, building on the strong foundations already established.”
