Durlston were delighted to host their inaugural Science Fair, welcoming former government scientist.
Inspired by British Science Week – pupils age 7 – 10 were tasked with creating a science project inspired by the theme ‘Curiosity’ – what’s your question? Deliberately open-ended, this gave pupils the freedom to explore the questions that interested them most.
Projects flooded in to school from innovative experiments to imaginative presentations. Organiser Mrs Broadwell commented “it was such an incredible event -the enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication shown by our pupils truly blew us away. The variety and quality of projects on display were outstanding. It was especially lovely to see the children so engaged, sharing ideas, asking questions, and enjoying exploring each other’s work.”
Some of the questions that inspired the children's projects included...
‘How did the Grand Canyon form?’ ‘How do music speakers work?’ ‘Which fruit is the best to use as a battery?’ ‘Can I help increase the harvest mouse population numbers in my local area?’ and “How clever are my rabbits?
Guest speaker Mr Thomas, a former government scientist, working for the ministry of defence for over 35 years presented prizes and spoke to the children about careers within the field of science. Mr Thomas was keen to help the children understand the vast opportunities within the field of science and that not all scientist wear white coats and work in a laboratory.
Durlston are now looking at expanding a future event to welcome other young scientists from the local community, giving like-minded children the chance to investigate and explore together.
